Babatas Water Project
Kathu Solar Park partnered with Sishen Iron Ore Company-Community Development Trust to provide the community of Babatas, in Kathu, with safe drinkable water. Following water testing in the project, we will deliver bulk water capacity to an estimated 600 households and reticulation to an estimated 300 households.

This is an essential programme, considering the drought and lack of access to safe drinking water in this community. Water is of significant importance for personal and agricultural use and is an ongoing challenge. There are currently no formal facilities and the community is not connected to municipal bulk services such as water and electricity.

Sishen Iron Ore Company-Community Development Trust is leading the design, procurement, permitting, construction, and overall project management of this project. This is one of the biggest water projects undertaken by the Sishen Iron Ore Company-Community Development Trust. Working in partnership with Gamagara local municipality and the Babatas Community Property Association, the project was officially launched on 28 October 2020.

The Babatas Community Property Association (CPA) is mostly a rural residential settlement with its main source of income coming from small-scale farming of animals such as cattle, sheep, and game. It is also a residential community for people who commute on a daily basis to Kathu and Kuruman.

Whilst this is a long-term project, the CV-19 pandemic and the increased need for adequate access to water, made this a priority project.
