Education remains a cornerstone of development, which is why Kathu Solar Park established its bursary programme three years ago. Applications are now open for the 2026 intake, offering support to young people from the John Taolo Gaetsewe (JTG) District.

The programme has already made a significant impact, assisting more than 40 students since its inception. To date, 11 beneficiaries have graduated, while 38 students – 19 at universities and 19 at TVET colleges – are currently receiving support.

“Our bursary initiative continues to open doors for youth across the District, providing access to tertiary education that might otherwise remain out of reach,” said Sandisiwe Mntonintshi, SED Manager for Kathu Solar Park. “We have seen first-hand how these opportunities change lives, not only for the students themselves but for their families and communities.”

The 2026 intake will aim to enrol at least 20 students, although final numbers will be determined by the performance and progress of the current cohort. Over the years, bursary recipients have pursued a broad range of qualifications, with popular choices including Accounting, Bachelor of Science programmes, and Education.

Kathu Solar Park invites applications from both prospective and current students registered at accredited South African public tertiary institutions – including TVET Colleges, Universities of Technology, and Universities. Applicants must be South African citizens residing within the JTG District.

The value of each bursary is determined on an individual basis and may cover tuition, registration, and examination fees; accommodation in university or college residences (or equivalent); meals; learning materials such as textbooks and stationery.

Allocations are subject to budget availability and guided criteria that spans academic excellence, financial need – combined family income not exceeding R600,000 per annum.

“Education remains a cornerstone of development in our region, and through this bursary programme, Kathu Solar Park is proud to play a part in unlocking opportunities for local youth,” concluded Mntonintshi.
